John Platter South African Wines 2006

Constantly updated and expanded, the latest edition of the John Platter Wine Guide is essential reading for all S.A. wine lovers. This year’s trend-setting colour identity is an eclectic blue, easily spotted on the bookshop’s shelves.

It features a record 72 new producers, and merchant houses and approximately 500 new wines were tasted, bringing the total of reviewed wines to 5400. Touring Wine Country is a comprehensive section, offering readers information on wine routes, farms, opening hours, accommodation, eating out, other tourist attractions and associations, plus easy-to-follow maps. Disabled access and child-friendly wineries are listed and tested.

Affordability being a key issue, value-for-money wines at all price points are highlighted. In the Wines of the year section, a new award for Superquaffer of the Year has gone to the most drinkable and well priced wine from the tasted entry-level wines, which is Grande Provence Angels Tears Red NV, a Bordeaux-style blend. Other wines covered in this section are:

  • Wine of the year 2006 (Glen Carlou Syrah 2004)
  • Highly recommended
  • Buy Now, drink later
  • Exceptionally drinkable and well priced
  • 11 wines, out of 72 candidates have been honoured in the coveted five stars section, which are:

The revamped General Index, under a new heading of This Year’s Ratings Summarised is a quick reference to star ratings featured in the book by cultivar. This is followed by the Top Performers section, which identifies wines that have excelled at local and overseas tastings and competitions. Both making tracking a specific wine’s performance relatively easy.

Revised and updated chapters on winetasting and winemaking terms, styles, industry overviews, grape varieties, winegrowing regions and food and wine pairing complete this highly recommended and indispensable guide, for those interested in or passionate about South African wine.
